ABOUT THE LECTURER:      
Miroslav Bárta is an acclaimed archaeologist and Egyptologist, specializing in the archaeology and history of the third millennium B.C. Since 2009, he has served as Professor of Egyptology at Charles University in Prague. He studied prehistoric and early historic archaeology and Egyptology at Charles University in Prague (M.A., 1994), and continued his Ph.D. studies in Prague and Hamburg (1994–1997). In 2003, he received a Fulbright fellowship to study at the University of Pennsylvania.

Previously, he served as deputy director at the Czech National Center of Egyptology (2000-2004) and has received numerous awards for his research and archaeological discoveries. For example, he received the research prize of the Swiss Egyptological Foundation Michaela Schiff Giorgini (2000 and 2005), the award of the rector of Charles University for research achievement for the monograph Collapse and Regeneration (2011) and for his archeological discoveries and research in Abusir. In 2014, Bárta served as Marilyn and William K. Simpson chair at American University in Cairo. His recent Czech monograph Příběh civilizace – Story of Civilisation (Academia 2016) was chosen as the best publication and the best scientific publication of the year. In 2017, he was chosen among the top five scientists of Charles University to receive Donatio Universitatis Carolinae for his excellence in science.

Professor Bárta has lectured throughout the world and is a published scholar of more than twenty monographs and collective volumes and over a hundred scientific papers. He founded think-tank Complex Societies. For more information, please visit www.miroslavbarta.cz.
