At Sphinx, an extensive Mesolithic burial ground was discovered.The 50 individuals uncovered so far represent one of the largest samplesof hunter-gatherer populations in the Sudan. However, we estimatethat as many as 400–450 deceased might have been buriedthere. The dead – both adults and children have been found – werelaid into the graves in a contracted position and only rarely with simplegrave goods. (photo Petr Pokorný)
